Obituary for Fr Peter McKie RIP

We are sorry to share the sad news that Fr Peter McKie died suddenly on Friday 4th December. Please remember him in your prayers. May he rest in peace.

Fr McKie was in his eighty second year, the fifty seventh year of his Sacred Priesthood.  May he rest in peace.

Peter was born on 8th December 1938 in Moss Side, Manchester and was baptised at English Martyrs, Whalley Range on Christmas Day 1938. He was educated at English Martyrs and then at St Bede’s College, Manchester.

Peter was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in July 1954 and continued at St. Bede’s, transferring to St Cuthbert’s College, Ushaw in September 1958. Fr Peter McKie was ordained to the Priesthood at the Cathedral Church of St John the Evangelist, Salford on 23rd May 1964.

Fr McKie served the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:

1964-1970:     Christ the King, Newton Heath as Assistant Priest

1970-1978:     St. Patrick’s, Oldham as Assistant Priest

1978-1984:     Sacred Heart and St. Edward, Darwen as Assistant Priest

1984-1996:     Holy Rosary, Fitton Hill as Parish Priest

1991-2010:     Dean of St. Mary’s Deanery

1996-2018:     St. Herbert’s, Chadderton as Parish Priest

Fr Peter retired in 2018 and initially resided at McAuley Mount Care Home before moving to the presbytery at Holy Family, Limeside.

Father McKie’s funeral will not take place until the new year. Details will be published in due course.
