Mothering Sunday: A Tradition of Appreciation for Mothers and Our Mother Church

In the heart of Lent, on the Fourth Sunday, known as Laetare Sunday, we celebrate Mothering Sunday.  This beloved tradition recognises the mothers in our own lives, but did you know its early tradition is rooted in a celebration of our faith?

Mothering Sunday traces back to medieval times and was originally a call to return to our “mother church,” the parish that connected our family to its faith. Servants and apprentices were granted a day off to visit their mother church, normally the parish of their baptism. Its symbolism mirrored the Lenten themes of gratitude and return. Over centuries this has evolved to a celebration of all mothers. Mothering Sunday still calls us home to a much loved place where we gather to mark all that life brings us.

Supporting Our Parishes: Investing in Your Mother Church

This Mothering Sunday, as we honour mothers who sustain us, would you also consider making a gift to your mother church, your parish?

Our Parishes play such vital roles throughout our lives. They hold us much like a mother’s care, but today they need your help.

We need to support our clergy and our churches now, to ensure they can provide care for future generations. This Mothering Sunday, would you consider a special gift to the parish that mothered your faith?  Every gift will make a difference.

This Lent, let Mothering Sunday inspire renewed commitment. Honour your mother, visit your parish, and pray for our spiritual family.
