Mgr Tom Mulheran RIP & Obituary

We are sorry to share the news that Monsignor Tom Mulheran died peacefully on Tuesday 27th September at Little Sisters of the Poor, Plymouth Grove.

Thomas was born on 12th November 1938 in Rochdale and was baptised at St Patrick’s church, Rochdale. He was educated at the local Primary School.

Thomas was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in July 1950 and attended Thornleigh College, Bolton. Tom transferred to St Joseph’s College, Upholland in September 1957.

Fr Thomas Mulheran was ordained to the Priesthood at the Cathedral Church of St John the Evangelist, Salford on 8th June 1963.

Fr Mulheran served the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:

1963-1970:     St. Sebastian’s, Salford Assistant Priest

1970-1971:     St. Michael’s, Oldham Assistant Priest (and Catholic Housing Association)

1971-1975:     Salford Diocesan Children’s Rescue Society, Didsbury, (Assistant Secretary from 1972)

1975-1990:     CCRS Secretary

1990-2010:     Diocesan Financial Secretary and Secretary to the Trustees

1990-2020:     Chaplain to Francis House

1993-2003:     Vicar General

2009-2019:     Appointed Trustee of Caritas, Diocese of Salford

 

Monsignor Thomas Mulheran was appointed a Prelate of Honour in 2006.

Following a period of ill health, Fr Tom moved to the Little Sisters of the Poor Nursing Home in Longsight in September 2021.

Fr Mulheran’s body will be received into Salford Cathedral for concelebrated Mass at 7:00pm on Wednesday 26th October.

Bishop John will celebrate the Requiem Mass at the Cathedral on Thursday 27th October at 12.10pm.
