Mgr John Chaloner RIP Obituary and Funeral Arrangements

We are very sorry to share the sad news that Mgr John Chaloner died peacefully on Thursday 24th October at Burnley General Hospital. Mgr Chaloner was in his eighty fifth year, the fifty second year of his Sacred Priesthood.

John was born on 20th March 1940 in Cheadle, Cheshire and baptised on 7th April 1940 at St Vincent’s church in Sheffield. He was educated at Cheadle Primary and Broadway Secondary schools and attended Loreburn College, Manchester .

John worked for a number of years in the Manchester Police Force reaching the rank of Sergeant. He was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford and studied at Osterley College and then at the Beda College in Rome.

Father John Chaloner was ordained to the Priesthood on 7th April 1973 at St Paul’s Basilica, Rome.

Fr Chaloner served the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:

1973-1974: St. Thomas of Canterbury, Higher Broughton as Assistant Priest

1974-1974: St. Cuthbert, Withington as Assistant Priest

1974-1975: St. Paul’s University, Ottawa to obtain BCL

1975-1977: St. John’s, Cathedral, Salford as Assistant Priest and Curial Office

1977-1977: St. Thomas of Canterbury, Higher Broughton as Assistant Priest and Curial Office

1977-1981: St. Cuthbert, Withington as Assistant Priest and Curial Office

1981-1982: St. Marie’s, Bury as Assistant Priest and part-time Chaplain to Holy Cross College

1982-1987: Loaned to Halifax Diocese, Nova Scotia

1987-1993: Further studies in USA

1993-2015: St. Hubert’s, Dunsop Bridge and Assistant Judicial Vicar

Fr Chaloner assisted with the work of the Diocese of Oslo Matrimonial Tribunal becoming the Associate Judicial Vicar. He was made Prelate of Honour in 2009 in recognition of his work for them.

Mgr John retired in 2015, residing at Lower Buck Clough, Cliviger before moving to Larmenier Village.

Mgr Chaloner’s body will be received into St. Hubert’s, Dunsop Bridge on Thursday 14th November with Mass at 5pm. Following the Mass, Mgr. John’s Body will be taken to St. Michael and St. John’s Church in Clitheroe.

Bishop John will celebrate the Requiem Mass on Friday 15th November at 11:00am at St. Michael and St. John’s Church.
