Journeying Through Lent: Stations of the Cross
Saturday 14th March 2026As the Lenten period continues, we are reflecting on the history and significance of the 14 Stations of the Cross. Take a look at this video from 2024 in which Fr Chris Gorton describes the origins of this longstanding devotion.
During medieval times, as Fr Chris reminds us, it was too dangerous for people to travel to Jerusalem, so in cathedrals and churches everywhere there would be presented the 14 Stations of the Cross, featuring prayerful meditations at each step. This allowed people to walk with Jesus on his journey to Calvary, just as we do today.
When we walk the Stations, we recognise Christ’s walk to the cross as he gave his life for us. This prayerful journey allows us to step into the past and become immersed in the stories of each Station. Fr Chris describes the Jewish tradition of Anamnesis, which encourages us to remember Christ’s suffering vividly whilst bringing these memories into the present moment for our continued reflection and connection to Christ.
This year, we invite you to join us in prayer as we journey through the Stations digitally on our social media channels, with daily reflections in the approach to Holy Week.
Follow along on Instagram or Facebook, and look out for the highlight on our profile to view each of the stories together.
