“It’s beautiful to come together and celebrate the faith”

Sunday 7th July 2024

It was a vibrant expression of faith as hundreds of Catholics flooded the streets of Manchester city centre for yet another Madonna Del Rosario procession.

The procession which is organised yearly by the Manchester Italian Association, took place this year on Sunday 7 July.

Beginning from St Michael’s former church in Ancoats, and passing through Manchester City Centre to St Peter’s Square, the procession involved parishes, groups and families carrying statues and banners, praying the Rosary and singing songs in honour of Our Lady.

Francesca, a member of the Manchester Italian Association described the procession as “a beautiful celebration of culture and our catholic faith”.

“We are keeping up with our tradition of many years ago. My Mum used to do it with a lot of our friends. That generation has passed it on to us to carry on the tradition. I love it. I am very proud”, she said.

Meg from Holy Spirit Parish East Manchester said;

“I’ve been carrying this banner specifically for over 10 years. This is my 11th year. It’s just always a beautiful experience…to see everybody come together and celebrate the faith”

It makes me personally proud and honoured to be able to share and demonstrate my faith in this way, but also to personally reflect as we walk”.

The procession was joined by Bishop John, representatives of The Italian Consulate and The Lord Mayor of Manchester.

Now in its 134th year, the Madonna del Rosario procession began in 1890 following the creation of the Manchester Italian Catholic Society.
