Fr Michael Twomey RIP

We are very sorry to share the sad news that Fr Michael Twomey died peacefully on Monday 16th September in Cork.

Fr Twomey was in his ninety first year, the sixty sixth year of his Sacred Priesthood.

Michael was born on 23rd November 1933 in Cork City, Ireland and baptised on 24th November 1933 at St. Joseph’s church in Mayfield, Cork City. He attended the Christian Brothers College in Cork City.

Michael was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in September 1952, studying at All Hallows College, Dublin and University College, Dublin.

Father Michael Twomey was ordained to the Priesthood on 14th June 1959 at All Hallows College, Dublin

Fr Twomey served  the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:.

1959-1967: SS. Aidan and Oswald, Royton as Assistant Priest

1967-1972: St. Mary, Bacup as Assistant Priest

1972-1980: St. Mary, Bacup as Priest in charge

1980-2009: St. Mary, Bacup as Parish Priest

Fr Michael retired in 2009 and returned to his family home in St. Mary’s Place, Cork City where he resided until November 2021 when he moved to Montenotte Nursing Home in County Cork.

Fr Twomey’s funeral took place at St. Joseph’s church, Mayfield on 19th September followed by burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Cork City.

A Month’s Mind Mass will be held at St. Mary’s church, Bacup on Wednesday 6th November at 7pm. If you wish to concelebrate, please bring with you an alb and white stole. Please note, St. Mary’s is not a big church so clergy may need to sit in the front pews rather than on the sanctuary.
