Fr John Mackie RIP Obituary

We are deeply saddened to share the news that Fr John Mackie died peacefully on Monday 3rd October.

Fr Mackie was in his seventy fourth year, the fiftieth year of his Sacred Priesthood.  May he rest in peace.

John was born on 4th January 1949 in Longsight, Manchester and baptised on 23rd January 1949 at St Joseph’s, Longsight. He was educated at St. Robert’s, Longsight and St Bede’s College, Manchester.

John was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in July 1960 and continued at St Bede’s. In September 1967, he transferred to St Mary’s College, Oscott.

Father John Mackie was ordained to the Priesthood at King’s Hall, Belle Vue on 2nd June 1973 (as part of the Bicentenary Celebrations of the erection of the first Roman Catholic parish in Manchester after the Reformation).

Fr Mackie served  the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:

1973-1981:     St. Thomas More, Alkrington                        Assistant Priest

1981-1984:     St. Catherine’s, Didsbury, Manchester          Assistant Priest

1984-1989:     Chaplain to Burnley General Hospital

1989-2003:     St. Anne’s, Crumpsall, Manchester               Parish Priest

2003-2011:     St. William of York, Bolton                            Parish Priest

2011-2017:     St Mary’s, Haslingden with St Veronica’s      Parish Priest

In 2017, Fr John retired. He resided at the Franciscan Convent Care Home in Burnley before moving to Boarbank Hall Nursing Home in 2019 where he was chaplain.

Bishop John will celebrate a Requiem Mass at St. Anne’s Church, Crescent Road, Crumpsall, M8 5UE on Wednesday 26th October at 12.00 noon.
