Fr David O’Kane RIP and Obituary

We are sorry to share the sad news that Fr David O’Kane died peacefully this morning.

Father O’Kane was in his ninety first year, the sixty sixth year of his Sacred Priesthood.

David was born on 31st December 1932 in Belfast, Co. Antrim and was baptised on 8th January 1933 at St Brigid’s, Belfast. He attended St. Patrick’s College, Armagh and All Hallows College, Dublin.

David was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in 1952, remaining at All Hallows College in Dublin

Fr David O’Kane was ordained to the Priesthood at All Hallows College, Dublin on 16th June 1957.

Fr O’Kane served the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:

1957-1967:     St. Patrick, Oldham                as Assistant Priest

1967-1969:     St. Willibrord, Clayton            as Assistant Priest

1969-1976:     St. Patrick, Collyhurst            as Assistant Priest

1976-1988:     St Herbert, Chadderton          as Parish Priest

1988-2017:     Sacred Heart, Rochdale         as Parish Priest

Fr David retired in 2017 and resided at Cathedral House. He moved to Little Sisters of the Poor in April 2022.

Fr O’Kane’s body will be received into St. Herbert’s, Chadderton OL9 0JY for concelebrated Mass on Wednesday 8th February at 7.00pm.

Bishop John will celebrate the Requiem Mass at St. Herbert’s on Thursday 9th February at 12 noon.
