Fr Bernard Charnock RIP and Obituary
Tuesday 4th April 2023We are sorry to share the sad news that Fr Bernard Charnock died peacefully on Tuesday 4th April.
Fr Charnock was in his eighty sixth year, the fifty ninth year of his Sacred Priesthood. May he rest in peace.
Bernard was born on 20th July 1937 in Bolton and baptised in August 1937 at St Columba’s, Bolton. He was educated at St Columba’s Elementary and Thornleigh College, Bolton.
Bernard was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in May 1956 and studied at Osterley College. In September 1958, he transferred to St Joseph’s College, Upholland.
Father Bernard Charnock was ordained to the Priesthood at the Cathedral Church of St John the Evangelist, Salford on 23rd May 1964.
Fr Charnock served the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:
1964-1973: St. Alban’s, Blackburn as Assistant Priest
1973-1982: St. Mary’s, Burnley as Assistant Priest
1982-1991: St. Joseph’s, Nelson as Parish Priest
1991-2019: St. Monica’s, Flixton as Parish Priest
In 2019, Fr Bernard retired. He continued to reside in St Monica’s Presbytery until he moved to McAuley Care Home on 28th October 2021.
There will be a Requiem Mass at McAuley Mount on Tuesday 9th May at 2:00 pm. Bishop John will celebrate a Requiem Mass at St. Monica’s Church, Flixton on Wednesday 10th May at 11:30 am followed by burial at Urmston Cemetery. If you wish to concelebrate at the Requiem Mass, please bring with you an alb and white stole.
