Centenary celebrations for St John the Baptist Church
St John the Baptist, 1 Dowling St, Rochdale OL11 1EXSaturday 14th June 2025
The Parish St Gabriel’s and St John’s, Rochdale are celebrating the 100th year since the Church was opened.
St John’s was opened on 14th June 1925 by Cardinal Bourne, Archbishop of Westminster. Records show that admission was by ticket only and a large crowd remained outside unable to find a place in the church. In those days the pews extended to where the Marian Room and the rooms on the confessional side are now: there would have been around 1,000 people in the church.
You are invited to celebrate with Bishop John as he delivers a Parish Mass at St John’s on Sunday 8th June at 10.30 am followed by refreshments.
Centenary Day is Saturday 14th June when we are having guided tours at 10.00am, 11.00am and 2.00pm; there is the usual Saturday Mass at 12.00 noon. The guided tours will include a description of the renovations that have taken place.
