Carols by Candlelight

Salford Cathedral, 250 Chapel St, Salford M3 5LE
Sunday 19th December 2021
7:30pm

We’re excited to announce the return of one of the most popular events at Salford Cathedral, Carols by Candlelight. This service will take place at 7:30pm on Sunday 19th December. The service will feature music from all of our Cathedral Choirs.

Carols by Candlelight is a chance for us to gather together and enjoy the wonderful acoustics of Salford Cathedral, to hear Advent readings and soak in the atmosphere of this historic building.

Alex Patterson, Director of Music at Salford Cathedral, had this to say about the service:

Carols by Candlelight is always such an atmospheric event and a great opportunity for us to showcase the range of music we sing here at the Cathedral. We have a range of your favourite traditional carols for the congregation to join in with, as well as solo choral items sung by the choirs: from the jaunty ‘Joys Seven’ arranged by Stephen Cleobury to the serene ‘Lux Aurumque’ by Eric Whitacre. We’re also delighted to feature two new pieces in our repertoire: Tamsin Jones’ ‘Noel: Verbum Caro Factum Est’ as well as the world premiere of a new piece written specially for this service, a setting of the medieval poem, ‘Adam lay ybounden’ by Florence Anna Maunders.

We invite you to join us in person for this service. Salford Cathedral is a safe environment that adheres to coronavirus guidelines. We understand that despite this a trip to the cathedral may not be possible for all those who wish to attend. Carols by Candlelight will therefore be streamed live and recorded on Salford Cathedral’s churchservices.tv profile, which you can find at www.salfordcathedral.co.uk.
