We Are Open! Salford Cathedral Welcomes Parishioners and Visitors Back

Monday 6th July 2026

Salford Cathedral has officially reopened its doors, welcoming parishioners, visitors and pilgrims for its first weekend of worship following a major programme of restoration, renewal and refurbishment.

The celebrations began on Saturday with the first Mass in the reopened Cathedral. In his homily, Canon Michael reflected on the remarkable achievement of the restoration project, reminding the congregation that: “Where there is a common purpose, great things can be achieved.” He encouraged everyone to see the reopening not as the end of a journey, but as the beginning of a renewed mission for the Cathedral parish and the Mother Church of the Diocese.

Canon Michael noted that while the project has created a beautiful place of worship, its true purpose is to help people encounter Christ and carry that faith into the world. By listening, learning and working together, he said, we can continue to build God’s Kingdom and be a beacon of light for others.

On Sunday, Bishop John celebrated Mass in a Cathedral filled with parishioners, visitors and a spirit of joy. He offered his thanks to everyone involved in the restoration project and paid tribute to the patience and support shown by people across the parish and Diocese throughout the works.

Hundreds of visitors were welcomed throughout the weekend, as people travelled from across the diocese and beyond for worship and to witness the Cathedral’s stunning transformation for themselves.

Reflecting on the words of St Peter, Bishop John reminded the congregation that “we are living stones” – each called to be an ambassador for Christ and to put faith into action. While churches are at the heart of our liturgical and sacramental life, he said, it is through our witness and service that Christ becomes present in the world today.

As the Cathedral begins this new chapter, all are invited to renew their own faith and commitment to being those “living stones”, helping to build stronger communities and sharing the love of Christ with others.

We look forward to welcoming you to Salford Cathedral soon.
