Mission Mentors: A Lasting Legacy at St Thomas More RC College
Thursday 9th July 2026Last week, five students from St Thomas More RC College were commended in a special award ceremony held in the college’s chapel, with certificates being presented by Bishop John following the celebration of Mass. As Mission Mentors, these extraordinary young people have completed each level of the Faith In Action Programme and are leaving behind a great legacy for their school and parish communities.
The Faith In Action Award recognises and rewards active faith and service in schools and parishes, and encourages young people to take their service into the wider community.
As part of the programme, children from Year 6 onwards are encouraged to dedicate their time and effort towards activities ranging from serving tea and coffee after Mass to volunteering for charities and organising fundraisers. Young people are also asked to reflect on the action they have taken, and to demonstrate the ways in which they have engaged with their work and grown their relationship with God and their community.
Classmates and family members gathered to celebrate the achievements of students Harry, Lily, Olivia, Paul, and Jack.
“The Faith in Action Award Scheme is a welcome encouragement to young people to actively develop their relationship with God, to deepen their faith and put that faith into action for the common good. Its strength lies in inviting young people and adults in schools and parishes to journey together in faith and to make a difference in the world around them; so that all might know the joy of the Gospel.”
Bishop John Arnold
Mr Hugh Brophy, Headteacher at St Thomas More, extolled the virtues of the five students in a heartfelt speech, and told them: “We will miss you – the school and our community is much richer for having had you here.”
Offering further insight into the group’s excellent work was Ms Jen Hague, leader of the school’s programme, who described their tireless efforts towards fundraising for various charities, their environmental stewardship, and contribution to parish events.
Ms Hague also gave thanks to the students’ families who have supported them in their endeavours, which include organising a pilgrimage to Lourdes and helping to run a faith-based youth club within their parish. Addressing the Mission Mentors, she said: “Your faith inspires the next generation, as well as the older generation – we are very proud.”
To Harry, Lily, Olivia, Paul, and Jack – the Diocese of Salford’s first ever Mission Mentors – we extend our congratulations and sincere thanks for all the wonderful work they have put into their school and parish communities, and for being an inspiration to future cohorts at their school and others.
