Rochdale primary celebrate School of Sanctuary Award
Friday 18th July 2025A Rochdale school has won recognition for its determination to provide a place of welcome for people seeking safety in their community.
St John the Baptist Primary School has received the “School of Sanctuary” award for its dedication to welcoming, caring for, and supporting displaced families seeking refuge in Rochdale.
Over the past two years, the school has welcomed 60 new children, not including those in nursery and reception class.
The award – a national accolade – recognised the friendly ethos of the school, the additional training staff have undertaken, fantastic support for children with English as an additional language, and its high expectations that all children will achieve well.

With more than 30 languages spoken at the school, St John the Baptist’s is a hub of vibrant diversity, with the celebration of different cultures, traditions, and experiences being a valued aspect of everyday school life as they live out their call to be “one family in Christ.”
Janet Holden, panel lead for The School of Sanctuary Award, said: “Becoming a School of Sanctuary is not an easy task, requiring a whole school effort and going above and beyond statutory requirements – and St John the Baptist is a truly exceptional example of what being a School of Sanctuary is all about. You should all be very proud.”
Headteacher Lisa Campbell was delighted to receive the award and said: “We are so proud to be the first School of Sanctuary in Rochdale!
“Our children are putting Gospel values into action as they welcome new arrivals from all over the world and show them how we are “one family in Christ” here at St John the Baptist RC Primary School.
“This recognition reflects the compassion, inclusivity, and commitment of our entire school community to creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
“Our students, staff, and families have embraced the values of kindness, understanding, and respect, and this award is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we stand together.”
