A memorial Mass to commemorate the centenary of the battle of Passchendaele

At 7.30pm on Friday, 10th November 2017, a memorial Mass will take place in the Cathedral Church of St. John the Evangelist, Salford, celebrated by Bishop John Arnold, to commemorate the centenary of the battle of Passchendaele, which took place from the 31st July – 10th November 1917.
This battle, was one of the most horrific of the First World War and many of the soldiers who fought and died came from the regiments based in our region. Situated in the north transept of the cathedral, is the War Memorial Chapel, where the names and initials of 663 men who died during the War are inscribed on eight white marble tablets. Three of these tablets contain the names of 107 men who at that time were members of various conferences of the St Vincent de Paul Society throughout the Diocese.
After the Mass, a special exhibition will be launched, which is dedicated to the approximate 8,000 men from the Diocese of Salford who sacrificed their lives during the Great War. The exhibition will run until November 2018
