Caritas Sunday

Wednesday 26th January 2022

This Sunday marks Caritas Sunday – a day in our diocese where we shine a light on the dedicated work carried out by our diocesan social action agency.

The staff and volunteers of Caritas Diocese of Salford would like to thank you for all your support over the past 12 months; for your prayers, practical donations and for your financial gifts.

Each gift allows us to support children, families and adults in crisis across the diocese.  We employ and train qualified staff and volunteers to offer one to one support – the long-term accompaniment needed for people experiencing poverty, discrimination or disadvantage. Your donations transform lives and give dignity and respect.

To demonstrate this transformation, we have published our latest Impact Report, which can be downloaded here.

Figures from the report show that, despite the restrictions and challenges of the pandemic, Caritas has been able to provide:

  • Over 3,000 one-to-one support sessions for people without a permanent home
  • Long-stay housing to 38 young parents in supported accommodation, with 9 young mothers helped into independent tenancy
  • Help into higher education, employment or training for 72 refugees
  • Support to over 200 older people to prevent isolation and ill health
  • And thousands of food parcels for families affected by poverty and hundreds of showers, meals, clothing and footwear provided for street sleepers

Covid-19 continues to have a devastating effect on people’s health, wellbeing and finances, which is worse for those already at risk in our communities.  Coupled with rising food, cost of living prices and a predicted 50% increase in energy prices, it is going to be another tough year for so many people.  Our individual acts of caritas – love in action – will be needed more than ever.

How to support Caritas Salford today

If you can, please help Caritas Salford to continue this vital work for those most in need in our communities by making a donation. There will be a retiring collection after this Mass.  Alternatively, you can Text SUNDAY to 70580 to donate £10, or you can visit our website to set up a direct debit or make a one off donation.

Please continue to keep the staff, volunteers and all those who need ‘caritas’ – love in action – in your prayers at this time in our communities.

Rochelle’s story

Three years ago, Rochelle had just become a young mum, but due to a breakdown in family relationships and other challenges, she found herself staying over at friends’ houses and ‘sofa surfing’ with a newborn.  Things were far from easy!  Then she came to stay at one of the Caritas homes for young parents.

She said: “With the help of Caritas, I ended up being able to become a better parent for my son, become a better person. Just having people there who actually care and want to help…

“They helped me get my own house and my son was able to have his first Christmas in our own home…

“The word love and being loved is to have people there who care about you and actually want to help you…

“And as for Caritas, they are genuinely loveable people, they are there to help you out, they are there to help you get your life back onto a stable track and so much more. They are just so supportive.”
