Caritas has received a £10,000 grant from the Morrison’s Foundation to enable more homeless people to receive support through Cornerstone Day Centre.

Caritas is a day centre in Hulme which provides support to homeless people in Greater Manchester.

The £10,000 donation from the Morrisons Foundation will go towards providing food and advice to those in need.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, Cornerstone has been working to adapt its activities to make sure it is still able to help the most vulnerable people in the community.

The centre is a service of Caritas Diocese of Salford and offers a full range of support services to homeless and vulnerable people, including refugees and asylum seekers, to improve life chances and quality of life.

Their goal is to offer a unique approach in helping people on the long journey to recovery through practical support.

The services include hospitality, food and access to support for rough sleepers and people at risk of becoming homeless.

According to Caritas, last year 51,343 people visited their day centre building in Hulme, where beneficiaries received bespoke personal support by some of the 100 plus volunteers who work there.

Rachel Taylor, Caritas Trust and Grants Officer, said, “Thanks to the support of the Morrisons Foundation, Caritas Cornerstone in Hulme, Manchester will be able to maintain its front line service to those without a home and in temporary accommodation.”

Lorraine Cumbo, Cornerstone Service Manager, said: “During the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been providing 300 fresh, filling and nutritious food parcels each week, reaching those most in need – the homeless and destitute – suffering the uncertainties of where their next meal might come from.”

As well as big donations, the individual kindness of parishioners around the diocese who make smaller but still as vital donations that ensure Caritas can continue to help those in need.

On Friday 10th July, people around the diocese will take to their floors, to their sofas and under their stairs, sleeping in an unusual place for this year’s Big Sleep In.
