Bishop John’s Christmas Message
Wednesday 25th December 2019Our celebration of Christmas this year finds us with an unusual degree of uncertainty and challenge. A new Government must establish its policies and consider fundamental changes in our relationship with neighbouring nations. So many countries around the world find themselves in conflict and unrest while we hear, and even experience directly, the increasing impact of Climate Change on our environment.
In the midst of such uncertainty and unsettling news we must be sure to celebrate an unchanging truth; that God so loves the world that He sent His Son to be our Redeemer. Christmas is a time for a renewal of our hope.
Celebrations with families and friends are important but all our festivities and celebrations need to be founded on our hope and our trust in God and His plan for us. Jesus brought renewed hope into the world when he was born in poverty in a place of military occupation and oppression. Whatever anxieties and challenges we face, as a nation, as communities and as individuals, we have every reason to celebrate the hope that lies at the heart of Christmas.
May God bless you and your families and may we renew our pledge to relieve the poverty that surrounds us in so many different forms, as we care for our brothers and sisters and the Earth, our common home.
