Protecting our common home, now and in the future

Over the last month, we have spent time acknowledging that people of all nations are caught up in an environmental crisis.  Celebrating the Season of Creation has been, for many Catholics and Christians around the world, a prayer-filled way to celebrate the nature and world we have around us while helping people to find God in this crisis.

The Season of Creation has allowed us some time to reflect on the reasons behind our need to act. Without immediate and sustained action on climate change, we will inflict irreparable damage on our planet which will adversely affect the lives of our children and future generations.

While the Season of Creation is now coming to an end, this does not mean our work can stop.

We must all continue playing our part. We must pray, we must take personal actions and we must also place pressure on governments to be bolder both in their policies and their actions.

People living in poverty around the world are disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change.  We are lucky here in the UK to have only seen minimal effects, but incidents of freak weather are becoming more and more frequent and are getting closer to home.

We must protect our common home and everyone who lives in it.  God’s face is most visible in the poor of every species suffering in this crisis, people and inhabitants of oceans and sky alike.
