RIP Fr Arthur Nearey Obituary Notice

We are sorry to share the sad news that Fr Arthur Nearey who died peacefully on Friday 3 July.

Please remember him in your prayers and in the celebration of Mass. May he rest in peace.

Fr Nearey was in his seventy fifth year, the fifty first year of his Sacred Priesthood.  May he rest in peace.

Arthur was born on 6th May 1946 in Langley, Middleton and baptised at St Francis, Gorton on 22nd May 1946. He attended St Mary’s elementary school in Langley.

Arthur was accepted as an Ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in June 1957 and attended St Bede’s College, transferring to Ushaw College in September 1964. Fr Arthur Nearey was ordained to the Priesthood at Our Lady of the Assumption, Langley on 21st February 1970.

Fr Nearey served the Diocese of Salford in the following appointments:

1970-1974:       St. Thomas of Canterbury, Higher Broughton as Assistant Priest

1974-1983:       St Mary, Swinton as Assistant Priest

1983-1985:       St. Mark, Pendlebury as Assistant Priest

1985-2018:       St. Mary, Littleborough as Assistant Priest and as Parish Priest from 1988

 

Fr Arthur retired in 2018 and continued to reside at St Mary’s presbytery before moving to New Road, Littleborough and then to Nazareth House in March of this year.

 

There will be a Requiem Mass for Fr Arthur at St Mary’s, Littleborough on Wednesday 22nd July but, in line with current government guidelines, this will be limited to 30 attendees (family and close friends). Afterwards, he will be laid to rest in his parents’ grave at Highfield Cemetery, Bredbury. A Memorial Mass will be held in the future.
