Message from Bishop John for the First Sunday of Advent

We come again to the beginning a New Year in the life of the Church. All around us, for several weeks, the accent has already been on preparing for Christmas but, for many people, Christmas no longer has anything to do with the birth of Jesus. A great deal of effort is spent on presents, decorations, food and parties. These are all perfectly good in themselves but they have hidden the very thing that they celebrate and can distract us from what the Feast is all about. God loves us and He sent His Son, Jesus, to live among us to be our saviour.

Let us be sure to enjoy Christmas but, as Christians, we must never allow ourselves to forget what it is all about.
