Sister Lucy retires from Caritas Cornerstone after 20 years’ service
Friday 15th October 2021An inspirational nun who has devoted a lifetime of service to our community is stepping down from her active role helping people in our diocese who are homeless, isolated, or seeking asylum.
Sister Lucy Dunne from the Franciscan Missionaries of St Joseph has been an integral part of the Caritas Diocese of Salford family for 20 years, spending almost every day at the Cornerstone Day Centre in Hulme.
Now in her eighties, Sr Lucy first began working at Cornerstone in 2002 after “retiring” from her previous role working with children.
Over the past two decades, Sr Lucy has become a constant and much-loved presence at the Cornerstone Day Centre, providing food, comfort, and words of wisdom for all who visit.
Patrick O’Dowd, Director of Caritas Diocese of Salford, said: “Sr Lucy has been a guiding light for the mission and delivery of services from the Cornerstone project since 2002. Building on the work of founders Canon Kevin O’Connor and Sister Pauline Gaughan, Sister Lucy became renowned for sharing her time and caring for every person as an individual, reflecting their innate human dignity.
“While we will miss her daily presence, leadership and good company, we know that Sister Lucy’s legacy lives on in the work that we do. Her spirit and prayers will enable us to thrive in our continuing work.”
We, as the diocese, would like to express our thanks and admiration for all Sister Lucy’s hard work over the years and wish her a happy and peaceful retirement.
Thank you also to all of our religious sisters who take on roles within our diocese and wider community. We are so grateful for your dedicated service and guidance.
In celebration and thanksgiving for all staff and volunteers, Caritas Salford will be holding their first Mass since the pandemic on Saturday 27th November. For further details, please email info@caritassalford.org.uk.
